Turkish Spoken by Turks in European Countries: Usage Environment, Sustainability Possibilities and Preservation Awareness
Abstract
The social functions of one's native language have gained great importance especially for countries where multiculturalism caused by emigration is a defining characteristic. Native language, which is regarded as a symbol of existence by the emigrants, is often perceived by the majority as a threat to national values and social harmony. Turks form one of the biggest emigrant groups in Europe (approximately 4 million). In the light of data gathered from research, this study discusses the characteristics of Turks that will enable them to conserve and support their native language in the newly developing environment in Europe.
