A total of 48 different actinomycetes strains were isolated from 16 different hypersaline soil samples in Turkey and tested for their production of antibacterial compounds against 2 of Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato strains and Xanthomonas campestris pv vesicatoria strain. Only 17 strains of actinomycetes isolated from 8 soil samples showed antimicrobial activity against tomato pathogenic bacteria and inhibition against X. c. pv vesicatoria 75-3 was the most significant. Actinomycetes strains B 19, B 18 and B 17 produced antimicrobial compounds against P. s. pv tomato 32, but not against a Turkish strain of P. s. pv tomato (TPPB 4212). Only two of actinomycetes strains B 16 and B 48 were inhibitory to Turkish strain of P. s. pv tomato. The identification of actinomycetes in this study was not attempted. It was shown that halophilic atinomycetes strains isolated from Turkey have the potential of inhibiting growth of tomato bacterial disease agents P. s. pv tomato and X.c. pv vesicatoria "in vitro" studies. Further experiments including the determination of active compound(s) chemically and the green house experiments should be carried out for detailed information.en_US
