Kasvetli İlişkiler: Edebiyat, Sınıf ve Hukuk

Abstract

Kasvetli İlişkiler, Charles Dickens’ ın Kasvetli Ev romanında hukuk ve hukukun temas ettiği toplumsal sınıflar arasındaki ilişkiyi değerlendirmeye, bu bağlamda da Dickens’ ın edebiyat kuramındaki yerini gözden geçirmeye yönelmiş bir çalışmadır. Hukuk ve Edebiyat çalışmalarında tarihselliğin yerinin altını çizerek; Viktoryen dönem toplumu, hukuk sistemi ve hukukçularını değerlendiren bu çalışma Dickens’ ın üretiminin bu dönemi yansıtmak bakımından değerini vurgulayarak toplumcu edebiyat eleştirisi sularına da girer. Çalışmanın sonucu olarak dönem hukukunun toplumsal sınıfların eşitsizliğine olan katkısının bulgulanmasının yanısıra yazarın genel algıda yarattığı, toplumsala ilişkin naif düşüncelere sahip anlatıcı imgesinin yetersizliği de saptanmaktadır.

This article aims at evaluating law and the social classes it affects and the network of relations between them in the Bleak House of Charles Dickens. It also reviews the position of Dickens in literary theory. Underlining the importance of historical approach in Law and Literature studies, the article uses the tools of socialist literary criticism to imply the novelist’s role to reflect and evaluate Victorian society, its legal system and lawyers. As for the outcome, not only the negative effects of the mentioned era’s legal system on the social inequality is detected but also, the inadequacy of seeing Dickens as a naïve thinker when it comes to social issues.
