Rheological Properties of Shear Thickening Fluids
Abstract
In this study, influences of temperature and amount of solid particles in Shear Thickening Fluids (STFs) were investigated. To observe the thickening mechanism of STFs, four main characteristic terms which are viscosity profile, critical shear rate, thickening period and thickening ratio, were defined and the effects of the variable parameters on these terms were discussed. In the experimental stage, rheological measurements were performed with silica based STFs with various silica amounts under various temperatures. According to the results, thickening behavior was improved as the solid particles were increased in the STFs. However, thickening mechanism decayed by the effect of increased temperature.
