Effects of Compaction Method and Aggregate Properties on Mechanical Behavior of Granular Base Layer
Abstract
The aggregate properties and their compaction degrees are the two most important factors that have significant effects on the design of granular highway base layers. The effects of impact compaction and vibratory compaction methodologies on the gradation, physical and mechanical properties of graded aggregate base (GAB) layers were observed in the current study. Sieve analysis, California bearing ratio (CBR) tests and resilient modulus tests were conducted on four different GAB materials. Results indicated that the vibratory compaction methodology has no significant damage on shape of the aggregates.
