The characterization and the utilization of the waste clays from Gumuskoy silver mine in brick industry
Abstract
In this study, the main characteristics and technological properties of the waste clays from silver deposit located in the northern part of Kutahya (mid-south of Turkey) are presented. The clays were characterized by X-ray diffraction, DTA/TGA, and granulometry. The technological properties related to water absorption, linear firing shrinkage and flexural strength were determined by tests conducted. Samples were prepared by adding 5, 10, 15, 20% (by weight) waste clays into a main batch and shaped by both extrusion and molding method, then they were fired at 950degreesC. The results showed that clays from the silver deposit are composed of illite, quartz and muscovite with a considerable amount of Fe2O3. According to the technological test results, these clays can be a potential raw material for use in structural applications.
