Vahdettin'in Amerikan Başkanına Mektubu

Abstract

Lozan Antlaşması ile varlığını ve bağımsızlığını dünyaya tanıtan ve Cumhuriyeti ilan ederek ulusu çağın gerisinde bırakan kural ve kurumları ortadan kaldırmaya başlayan yeni Türkiye Devleti, 3 Mart 1924'te Hilafeti kaldırarak Hanedan mensuplarını ülkeden çıkardı. Bu önemli olay, yurt içinde ve dışında yankı yaptı. O sıralarda San-Remo'da sürgünde bulunan Vahdettin tepkisini Amerika Başkanı'na yazdığı bir mektupla dile getirdi.Osmanlı Devletinin yıkıldığını kabul etmediğini,mevcut durumun geçici olduğunu ifade ettikten sonra, hilafet ve saltanatın varlığını sürdürdüğünü iddia etmekte, hanedan mensuplarının sürgün edilip mal ve mülklerine el kokutmasının haksızlık olduğunu, bu konuda yardımlarını istediğini belirtmektedir. Bugüne kadar ele alınmayan mektubun kapsamını, orijinal metni ve çevirilerini yayınlıyoruz.

The New State of Turkey announced its existence and independence to world with Lausanne Treaty and started to abrogate old rules and institutions which led the nation to lag behind of the age. Turkish Republic abolished the Caliphate 3 March, 1924 and expelled the members of the dynasty. This significant event had repercussions in domestic and abroad. During that time Sultan Vahdettin, who was in an exile in San Roma, expressed his reaction with a letter written to the President of U.S.A. After stated in his letter that he did not admit the fall Otoman State and called the existing situation as temporary, he claimed the Caliphate and Sultanate was still exist and the confiscation of the properties of dynastic family was unjust and asked for his help in this issue. We are publishing the content of the letter with its orijinal copy in Otoman Turkish and its translation in English.
