Effect of using Newspaper in social studies on academic success and attitudes of fourth grade students

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı, ilköğretim dördüncü sınıfta Sosyal bilgiler dersinde gazete kullanımının öğrencilerin akademik başarılarına ve tutumlarına etkisini belirlemektir. Araştırma, deneme modellerinden “öntest-sontest kontrol gruplu model”e göre desenlenmiş, araştırmanın verileri bu modele göre toplanmıştır. Araştırmaya ilişkin uygulama, 2007-2008 öğretim yılının güz döneminde Eskişehir Merkez Namık Kemal İlköğretim Okulu’nda deney ve kontrol grupları olarak belirlenen 4-A ve 4-C sınıflarında gerçekleştirilmiştir. Deney ve kontrol gruplarının öntest ve sontest puanları elde edildikten sonra, grupların ortalama puanları ile puan dağılımlarının standart sapmaları hesaplanmıştır. Gruplararası karşılaştırmalarda t testinden yararlanılmıştır. Araştırmada anlamlılık düzeyi olarak .05 güven düzeyi benimsenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, Sosyal bilgiler dersinde gazete kullanılarak öğretim yapılan deney grubu ile gazete kullanılmadan öğretim yapılan kontrol grubundaki öğrencilerin akademik başarıları ve derse ilişkin tutumları arasında deney grubu lehine anlamlı bir fark olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır.

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of using newspaper on academic success and attitudes of fourth grade students in social studies course. The quantitative data of the study were obtained with pre-test post-test control group model” among the experimental models. The experiment regarding the study was conducted in fall term of 2007–2008 academic year with the students of 4-A and 4-C classes in Namık Kemal Primary School in Eskişehir. The average scores of the groups and the standard deviations of score distributions were calculated. In comparison between the two groups, t-test was used. The significance level was taken as .05. As a result of the study, it was indicated that there was a significant difference between the experimental group using newspaper in Social Studies and the control group that doesn't use newspapers, in favor of the experimental group by means of their academic success and attitudes for the course.
