Ceramic Basic Design Course Education for Freshmen & Museum of Anatolian Civilizations Example

Abstract

Anadolu University Fine Arts Faculty Ceramic Department welcomes its students with first sculpting method at the first semester. Ceramic basic design course in which the students work with clay for six hours in a week is one of the most important course vocationally. During sculpting the clay is trained, first products are being formed within this course. A trip to Anatolian Civilizations Museum which is founded at the capital city of Turkey is organised. In this museum Anatolian archaeology and a collection of foundlings since palaeolithic age till today is presented with chronologic order. After spending 3-4 hours at the museum selection of the subject and the sculpting technique is decided. By returning from trip a course on basic sculpting techniques is given to students. The course starts with shaping pots that are inspired from the food pots of ancient history. Personal hand and finger prints on the formed pots make the art pieces unique. Students meet with ceramic through this project by thinking both the museum, history and sculpting techniques together. Within this course good examples are designed after firing and glazing with the participation of 25-30 students.
