The Development of Tablewares At Arabia Porcelain Factory in the Modern Finnish Design History

Abstract

Arabia is one of the leading ceramic factories in northern Europe, an important brand recognized by its designers and unique products associated with Finland. With its managers and designers, it has always had an innovative, characteristic identity. Throughout its history it has played an important role in the development of tableware culture in Scandinavian countries and also European countries with its understanding of product development to make everyday life more beautiful rather than just producing tableware to meet needs. This article depicts the developments, products and designers in chronological order in line with the developments of the Modern Finnish Design since the establishment of Arabia Factory. In addition, as an important institution serving almost 150 years of daily life in Finland, the product range reflecting Arabia's characteristic Nordic style has been addressed and highlighted. The article also sheds light into how Arabia's institutional identity and principles became a phenomenan in the world in the light of the samples examined where they were produced.
