Lise Öğrencilerinin Uluslararası Bakalorya Diploma Programını Tercih Etme/Etmeme Nedenleri

Abstract

Bir devlet lisesi olan İstanbul Prof. Dr. Mümtaz Turhan Sosyal Bilimler Lisesi'nde öğrencilerin Uluslararası Bakalorya Diploma Programı'nı tercih etme ve etmeme nedenlerini belirlemeyi amaçlayan bu araştırma nitel araştırma desenlerinden durum çalışması deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada, 2011 - 2012 öğretim yılı bahar döneminde İstanbul Prof. Dr. Mümtaz Turhan Sosyal Bilimler Lisesi'nin onuncu (Uluslararası Bakalorya Diploma Programı'nı tercih etme aşamasında olan) ve on birinci (Uluslararası Bakalorya Diploma Programı'nda öğrenim görmekte olan ya da bu programı seçmeyen) sınıflarında öğrenim görmekte olan 134 öğrenci ile çalışılmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri açık uçlu anket yoluyla toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde içerik analizi gerçekleştirilmiş ve NVivo 9.0 nitel veri analizi programından yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda; öğrencilerin kültürel ve sosyal anlamda kendini geliş- tirme, eğitim programının ulusal programdan daha kaliteli olması, yabancı dili geliştirme, Uluslararası Bakalorya diplomasının gelecekteki kariyer planlarına olan artısı, uluslararası diploma ile iki diploma alma şansı, ezberci eğitimden uzak olması, yabancı kültürlere olan ilgi, aile isteği, düzenli çalışma alışkanlığı kazanma, İstanbul Sosyal Bilimler Lisesi'nde olması ve arkadaş tavsiyesi gibi nedenlerle Uluslararası Bakalorya Diploma Programı'nı tercih ettikleri; üniversite sınavı, maddi nedenler, Diploma Programı'nın çalışma yoğunluğu, okuldaki uygulamaların yetersiz olması, dil yetersizliği, yurt dışında eğitim düşünmeme, Türkiye'deki üniversitelerin Bakalorya diplomasını tanımamaları, üst dönemlerdeki Bakalorya Diploması öğrencilerinin deneyimleri, programın faydalı olduğunu düşünmeme, diğer Sosyal Bilimler Liseleri'nden gelen öğrenciler gibi nedenlerle de Diploma Programı'nı tercih etmedikleri belirlenmiştir.

The present study which aims to find out the reasons why the students studying at İstanbul Prof. Dr. Mümtaz Turhan Social Sciences High School, which is a public one, prefer or do not prefer International Baccalaureate Program was conducted using the case study being one of the qualitative research designs. The study was carried out in 2011-2012 academic year and included 134 students -10th graders who were about to choose International Baccalaureate Program and 11th graders who were or weren’t a part of this program. The data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire and analyzed using the content analysis and NVivo 9.0 qualitative data analysis program. As a result of the study, it was found out that among the reasons why the students prefered International Baccalauretae Program were the students’ willingness to develop themselves in cultural and social aspects, the curriculum’s having a higher quality than the national one, opportunities to develop their foreign language, contribution of the International Baccalaureate certificate to their future career plans, opportunity to get two certificates together with the international one, the program’s not using rote learning, interest in foreign cultures, familiar expactations, getting the habit of studying regularly, the program’s being at İstanbul Social Sciences High School and recommendation from the friends. On the other hand, students stated that they did not prefer this program because of the university exam, economic reasons, study load of the International Baccalaureate program, insufficient school practices, language deficiencies, not having an aim to study abroad, Turkish universties’ not recognizing the International Baccalaureate certificate, the experiences of the International Baccalaureate students at higher grades, not regarding the program as useful and because of some other reasons
